Arbeia Roman Fort

Year 4 Visit to Arbeia

On Monday 19th September, Year 4 visited Arbeia Roman Fort, which was constructed to guard the main sea route to Hadrian's Wall. It was a key garrison and military supply base to other forts along the Wall and is an important part of the history of Roman Britain.
By stepping into the Fort the children were immersed in the world of the Romans. They looked inside full-scale reconstructed Roman buildings, including the West Gate, the Commanding  Officer's house and a soldiers’ barrack block.Through the ‘Time Quest’ activity they were able to experience how archaeologists excavate to find artefacts from the time of Roman Britain. A highlight of the day was meeting Maximus, a Roman soldier. As well as being able to find out about Roman army life, the children were able to kit up for drill and battle training.
